A Very Cali Christmas Tree

This year was a really great year here in California. So I decided to celebrate California by adding some of my favorite things about this sunny, beautiful place into the decor of my Christmas tree. Flowers, botanicals, berries, fruit….oh my! Definitely not a traditional Christmas tree in color or decorations…but I went for it, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out!

WHAT YOU NEED:

1.) Flocked Christmas tree (mine is a 7.5′ from Michael’s but there are endless beautiful options)

2.) Silk flowers of your choice (I recommend different colors, sizes and textures)

3.) Large dried dollar eucalyptus branches

4.) Faux berries bunches (I used green, in multiple sizes)

5.) Faux persimmon branches (these mango branches or pomegranate branches or lemon branches would be cool too!)

6.) Christmas tree topper (my star is from IKEA)

7.) Dried orange slices

8) Tree skirt (I used a yard of luscious faux fur I found at Joann Fabrics)

THE INSTRUCTIONS

The best instruction I can offer for decorating a Christmas tree is to keep stepping far back and looking at the tree as a whole to see if your placement of decorations is balanced.

I also recommend placing the branches of persimmons at a 45 degree angle as if they are wrapping the tree (like a ribbon would). It gives the decorations some movement and helps it feel like there is some continuity in the decor instead of randomly placing things in the tree.

Have fun with the flowers, berries & fruit you choose. In my humble opinion stepping away from traditional Christmas colors and decorations makes the tree intriguing and conversational. My plan is to use the flowers for other DIYs in 2019, so they were worth the investment!

I will add, items that were light in color didn’t show/pop as well with the flocked branches, so keep that in mind when picking your decorations. I love the orange pop of persimmons and orange slices in this tree! I encourage you to go for whatever your wildest Christmas vision might be!

Sending good wishes for a very happy holiday season, and a joyful, healthy courageous and creative 2019.
