How to DIY Your Website Like A Professional Web Designer

December 3, 2020

In a world full of mediocre DIY website building platforms, how do you DIY a website that looks like you paid a designer $10,000 to create it? The answer is A LOT easier than you think, you just might not be aware of the incredible tools that are out there. Here are some simple suggestions that don’t require a computer science degree or even knowing a single line of code.

Use Showit, the drag and drop website builder

Don’t know Showit? You’re about to be really glad you do! With Showit you can DIY a website without ever looking at a line of code. (Did you hear that? No code. Not a single line!) Welcome to the dreamy drag-and-drop website builder for businesses who want to stand out online.

Showit also integrates with WordPress, so you’ll keep the world’s most powerful platform for blogging and combine it with the total design freedom of Showit to customize every pixel of your site. (Really, every single thing on every single page can be edited to suit your brand!) It is the greatest web builder to ever exist! (Trust me, I’ve used them all.)

Start with a thoughtful and strategic website template

Do not start from scratch on Showit. Start your design with a website template and go from there (otherwise you’re starting with a blank page). Templates help give your site an overall frame to work from and general UX direction. The beauty of a Showit template is that you can customize EVERYTHING in the template by just clicking, dragging, and dropping. Squarespace or WordPress templates can’t be tweaked or customized without knowing code to update the design. Showit is the opposite. Think of your Showit template as a starting place.

I recommend checking out the Sisoo Sites shop for strategic and stunning Showit templates for every kind of business!

Be mindful of aesthetics

OK, so you found the right platform (Showit) and the right template (Sisoo Sites). So now how do you DIY your website so that it looks like you hired a professional designer to build it?

Here are a few design rules I stick to that have helped me create beautiful websites since 2008!

→ Choose colors that speak to your brand

Your website’s brand color palette has a much greater impact than you realize. Color can help you best share your story & make your website stand out in a crowd. Simple tweaks to your palette can ooze sophistication and professionalism. Not sure where to start in selecting your brand colors? Take my quick color quiz to help you choose the best palette for your brand!

→ Alternate Your Canvas Layouts

A canvas is a smaller section of each page on your site. Your welcome (or “hero”) image would live on one canvas. Your footer would live on a different canvas. When arranging each page, make sure to mix up the canvas layouts to create a visual interest that directs your reader from the top to the bottom of the page. If each canvas repeats the same shaped image with the same text layout, the visitor will likely lose interest and leave your site. Keep each canvas exciting and fresh!

Also, if you use an image or a pattern on canvas A, use a solid background on canvas B. Continue to alternate throughout the entire page. This creates visual balance, instead of images and patterns on every single canvas that can look too busy and chaotic.

→ Use Complementary Fonts

One of the most important aspects of a well done DIY website is choosing the right font combinations. Nothing screams “amateur website” like using fonts that don’t go together! I love to check Pinterest for font combination ideas. (There are TONS!)

General font combinations tips to follow:

  • Combine San serif and serif fonts.
  • Combine fonts of similar time eras/styles.
  • Use two or three fonts, and stay consistent throughout your site.
  • Or use the same font family in different weights and character styles.

DIY a designer logo

A logo is not your brand, and your brand is not your logo. HOWEVER! A logo is one of the first features of your website that your visitor will notice, and like it or not, it will set the tone for your site’s professionalism.

The top rule for DIY logo design: keep it simple and use a timeless font. The cleaner it is, the more professional it looks. Play with the character styles and spacing until it looks unique.

If you’re looking for a clever way to DIY a logo with more design character, I’ve figured out a quick and easy way to create a logo that looks like you hired a pro! In less than one hour, you’ll be able to call yourself a logo designer with this hack. You’re going to love how easy it is and how endless the possibilities are! Click here to learn how.
