Eau de toilette! Congrats on clicking on this link! You are about to do the ultimate DIY–your friends will be all, “you made WHAT!??” Most DIY perfume uses vodka, not perfumer’s alcohol…maybe because perfumer’s alcohol is harder to get ahold of? After more research, I found out that you can indeed buy small amounts of perfumer’s alcohol without an alcohol permit (under 5 gallons in one calendar year is OK with the Tax & Trade Bureau of the US, any more than that and you will need a permit). With a little more research, I found this article on Save on Scents’ blog, Making Perfume/Cologne. If you scroll to the middle of the post, you’ll find fragrance levels for perfume, eau de perfume, eau de toilette, eau de cologne, cologne splash. If you were ever wondering what the different between all these is, it’s the amount of fragrance- perfume (30%); eau de perfume (15%); eau de toilette (8%); cologne (5%); and cologne splash (3%). Click through for supplies and how to steps.

WHAT YOU NEED

Perfumer’s alcohol

Fragrance oil of your choice (try here or here)

Distilled water (do not use tap!)

Slim roll on bottles with rollerballs and caps

Mini funnel (I like to use one funnel per scent so you don’t have to wash in the middle of pouring different scents)

Glass jar with stopper (I love these apothecary style ones)

THE INSTRUCTIONS

The eau de toilette ratio is 2 parts fragrance oil, 23 parts perfumer’s alcohol, 3 parts water.

1) Take your clean & dry jar and prepare your eau de toilette by combining fragrance oil and alcohol, and lastly, distilled water in the proportions above.

2) Slowly stir to mix thoroughly.

3) Let mixture mature for at least 48 hours, up to 6 weeks. The longer you let the mixture mature, the stronger the scent will be (and the less alcohol you will smell). If you smell too much alcohol at 48 hours, let it mature longer. Eventually the mixture will mature and you will only smell the fragrance. I’ve actually been so busy that I let these mature for about 2 months– they smell incredible! (Check out my scents: Tahitian Sea Salt, Clover & Seamoss, Lemon & Tonka, Cotton & Birch, Black Plum & Amber.)4) Be sure to keep jar(s) in a cool dark place for best results with caps/corks on.

5) Once they have matured, stand your empty roller ball vials up on the tube tray without the caps. Using your funnel, pour the matured perfume mixture into each vial, leaving a little room at the top.6) Pop the roller ball onto the top, as well as the cap. Be careful not to spill.
